I never thought I would end up a graphic designer. I didn’t even own a computer until I was twenty-four years old. It wasn’t until I took a computer graphics class that I realized my passion. After working briefly at a magazine I decided to pursue a degree and career in visual communication. I work primarily in the graphic programs Illustrator, Photoshop and Quark, but occasionally will work hand sketches and collage into my work. My pieces and messages are expressed in the form of posters, invitations, informative printed institutional support materials and other print collaterals.
At an early stage in my career, I worked with a local charity. I was inspired by the challenge of working with a non-profit and trying to express their mission through visual communication. Currently I work primarily with non-profit organizations that need printed support materials for fundraising, outreach and mission awareness. My creative process begins by finding the most creative way to express the idea or message my client needs to communicate. Budget, or lack there of, is usually one of my main restrictions in the creative process. I have learned to effectively translate an organization’s message visually within their monetary boundaries. I like the challenge of restricted funds as it pushes me to be a more innovative designer, open to learning and using new printing and design processes to make effective, fresh and visually interesting work within a limited budget.
Gestalt, the philosophy that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts is a major influence in my work. Inviting the viewers to participate with the work and fill in the blanks is a key component in my work. I don’t want to be too obvious, tending towards a “less is more” approach in my visual designs. I recognize that negative space is just as important as what is printed and many of my designs utilize limited color palettes, keeping a refined tone. I employ non-traditional folds and sizes to attract attention, adding originality to my work. The organization’s mission statement also plays a major role in the final printed piece as I design to reflect their philosophy.
Creating pieces that successfully encourage others to help and bring awareness to an organization is truly fulfilling. I am committed to getting their message across effectively and visually communicate their mission with interesting and compelling designs.
